Flight to Sinai is a 20-25 minute narrative short film made in the style of a film musical. The film follows Jack Strong, a 16 year-old gay teenager whose Baptist family recently moved to San Francisco. He comes home from school and comes out as gay to his parents in an emotional reaction to his father ranting about the evil present in the city. After coming out, he learns that he is going to be sent to Love’s Path, a camp that will cure his homosexual urges. Following, he has two conversations, which pull him in opposite directions. His friend Sophie tells him that he should change, while another teen who’s going to the camp tells Jack that he should resist and be who he truly is. He is left confused and does not make a decision until the final moments of the film.
Set in San Francisco, yet showing Jack’s conservative family life, Flight to Sinai is about the contrasts between the openly gay lifestyle that Jack initially longs for and the pure Christian life that he is told that he should live. The yin and yang of the two conversations and the two worlds echoes Jack’s internal conflict, a conflict that every gay Christian goes through as they reconcile their faith and sexuality.
